Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies at 38 after arrest

Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after he was removed from FIFA's list of World Cup officials following his arrest in the United Kingdom over allegations of sexual assault. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death, stating it was "shocked" and deeply saddened by the news. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Arrest and Investigation

Dieperink was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in April after officers responded to a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a teenage boy at an address in Croydon, London. According to the Metropolitan Police, a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. However, following an investigation that included reviewing CCTV footage and examining digital devices, officers concluded that the available evidence did not meet the threshold for prosecution, and no further action was taken.

Removal from World Cup and Dieperink's Response

Following the investigation, FIFA removed Dieperink from its roster of match officials for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Reacting after the decision, Dieperink maintained his innocence, saying he had been "wrongly accused" and had fully cooperated with the police investigation. He added that he immediately informed FIFA, UEFA and the KNVB about the matter and expressed disappointment at missing the tournament.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of referee Rob Dieperink.
