Christian Eriksen Hospitalised After Collapsing in Denmark vs Ukraine Friendly
Eriksen Hospitalised After Collapse in Denmark Friendly

Danish footballer Christian Eriksen was hospitalised after collapsing during Denmark's international friendly against Ukraine in Odense, leading to the match being abandoned on Friday night. The 34-year-old VfL Wolfsburg midfielder fell to the ground in the 65th minute, appearing to clutch his chest, prompting an immediate medical response. Norwegian referee Sigurd Smehus Kringstad called off the game in the 79th minute due to the incident.

Immediate Medical Response

National team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness quickly. He stated that the player's implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) responded as expected. Eriksen was surrounded by Denmark and Ukraine players as medical staff treated him on the pitch, while a hushed crowd later broke into chants of 'Eriksen, Eriksen' at Nature Energy Park.

Previous Cardiac Incident

This is not the first time Eriksen has suffered a collapse on the field. In June 2021, during Denmark's Euro 2020 match against Finland in Copenhagen, he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. He was subsequently fitted with an ICD and, after being released by Inter Milan, resumed his career with Brentford in February 2022, just eight months after the incident.

Current Condition and Hospitalisation

Doctor Boesen added: 'Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.'

Support from Clubs and Fans

Eriksen's club, VfL Wolfsburg, posted on social media: 'We're thinking of you, Christian,' and stated they were in close contact with the Danish federation, adding 'All the best and a speedy recovery.' Former club Tottenham Hotspur also expressed support, writing on X: 'Our thoughts are with Christian Eriksen and his family. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Christian. We're all with you.'

The incident has reignited discussions about player health and the effectiveness of ICDs in preventing fatal cardiac events. Eriksen's quick recovery and ability to walk off the pitch have been seen as a positive sign, though further tests are expected to shed light on the cause of the collapse.
