Funke Akindele's Sacrifice for ₦2.7 Billion Box Office Hit
Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed the immense personal toll behind the commercial success of her latest film, Behind The Scenes, which grossed ₦2.7 billion at the Nigerian box office. In an interview with Bella Naija conducted four days before the clip went viral on X on Monday, Akindele described how she forgot to eat, neglected her hair, and abandoned social gatherings to focus entirely on the project.
“For the last movie to cross ₦2.7 billion, it was a lot of sleepless nights for me. A lot of sacrifice, giving my all. I forget to eat sometimes,” she said. “I abandoned myself for work. I don't even make my hair, except I'm going on the red carpet or for something very important. I don't attend parties. I don't go to greet people at home. I put everything into work, research, writing, work. I'm neck deep into work.”
Balancing Success and Self-Care
Akindele noted that she has only recently begun redirecting energy toward herself. “It's just now that I'm relaxed, feeling fresh, doing the skincare routine, looking beautiful, smelling nice,” she said. The filmmaker, who wrote, produced, and directed Behind The Scenes, added to her string of commercial milestones, including her 2023 film A Tribe Called Judah (over ₦1 billion) and the Omo Ghetto franchise.
Her comments have reignited conversations about the price of sustained success in Nollywood. Many X users expressed sympathy, with some noting that her openness about the unglamorous side of ambition is rare in the industry. Others highlighted the discipline required to achieve repeated nine-figure box office returns.
Reactions and Industry Impact
The resurfaced clip drew widespread reactions online, with users pointing to Akindele's remarks as a reminder of the dedication behind commercial breakthroughs. “These were the things I did for the last movie to be able to gross 2.7 billion naira,” she said, emphasizing that her sacrifices extended beyond professional effort to personal withdrawal.
Akindele is widely regarded as a key architect of the modern Nollywood box office era, where Nigerian films consistently cross nine-figure revenue marks and compete for mainstream attention beyond the country's borders. Her latest film's success further cements her status as one of Nollywood's most commercially successful filmmakers.
