Game of Thrones Actor Michael Patrick Dies at 35 After Battle with Motor Neurone Disease
Award-winning Irish actor Michael Patrick, who appeared in the globally renowned television series Game of Thrones, has tragically passed away at the young age of thirty-five. The talented performer, also known professionally as Michael Patrick Campbell, succumbed to motor neurone disease, a rare and debilitating neurological condition, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
Diagnosis and Artistic Response
Michael Patrick received his devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease in February 2023. Rather than retreating from public life, the actor channeled his personal struggle into powerful art. He created and starred in a groundbreaking adaptation of The Tragedy of Richard III, where he portrayed the titular character as a royal figure also living with MND and using a wheelchair.
This courageous performance earned him the prestigious Judges' Award at The Stage Awards in January 2025, highlighting his exceptional talent and resilience. The production was staged at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast during 2024, receiving critical acclaim for its raw emotional depth and innovative storytelling.
Peaceful Passing and Family Tributes
Patrick's wife, Naomi, announced his passing through social media on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. She revealed that he died peacefully at the Northern Ireland Hospice, surrounded by family and friends, after being admitted ten days earlier.
"Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are," she wrote in her emotional tribute. "It's been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life. He lived a life as full as any human can live. Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger-haired man."
Naomi concluded her message with a poignant quote from Irish poet Brendan Behan, encouraging others to embrace life's simple pleasures: "'The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.' So, don't overthink it. Eat. Drink. Love."
Notable Career and Industry Recognition

He subsequently appeared in numerous acclaimed productions, including the drama The Spectacular, BBC One's Blue Lights, Steven Knight's This Town, and BBC Three's My Left Nut—a project he also co-wrote, demonstrating his versatility as both performer and creator.
Jimmy Fay, executive producer at the Lyric Theatre Belfast, paid heartfelt tribute to Patrick, stating that the theatre community had "lost a great artist." He added, "He used the slings and arrows of the outrageous fortune thrown at him and turned them into visceral and vibrant art."
