J Bums reveals how husband's 11-month unemployment tested their marriage
J Bums on husband's 11-month job loss and marriage test

Nigerian wellness entrepreneur J Bums, also known as Bunmi George, has shared how her husband's 11-month unemployment tested and ultimately strengthened their marriage. Speaking during a podcast interview with Ifedayo Agoro, she revealed that her pilot husband lost his job and subsequently joined her company, Shredder Gang, where he earned a salary and even handled product deliveries.

Husband’s Job Loss and Immediate Action

According to J Bums, the news of her husband's job loss was difficult because flying was his passion. She said, "Anybody that's married to a pilot will know that a pilot is in love with his job. He loves being in the air." Rather than complain, her husband focused on survival strategies. He suggested selling one of their two cars and reducing household expenses. She initially resisted the changes due to their comfortable lifestyle.

Joining the Wife’s Company

Her husband eventually joined Shredder Gang as an employee, earning a salary and making deliveries. J Bums said, "He actually came to work for my company... He used to come to the office and he was earning a salary. Sometimes he would have to go and do deliveries." Some customers discovered it was her husband personally delivering their orders.

Maintaining Respect and Leadership

Despite becoming the breadwinner, J Bums emphasized that leadership in marriage is not about income. She said, "Leadership is not about how much money you make. It's about the position that you have in the home." She became more careful with her words and actions, understanding the emotional toll of unemployment.

Strengthened Relationship

Her husband stayed active by fasting, praying, helping around the house, and seeking opportunities. J Bums believes the difficult period brought them closer: "That process actually brought us closer." The couple survived by downsizing to one vehicle and reducing domestic staff.

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

The story sparked mixed reactions on X. Some praised the couple's maturity: "This is beautiful & respect to him, as a woman, big respect to you too, because a similar kind of testing phase has destroyed so many marriages." Others expressed concern about public perception: "My fear is that in your effort to inspire society, you haven't sacrificed your husband on the cross of social media and public perception." Some questioned the arrangement: "This sounds weird. Who was paying him, you?" Another user argued: "If she is out of job and wants to work in the firm, she is definitely coming as Managing Partner. How can I be paying her salaries when she is supposed to be co-owner of the business." Others focused on their teamwork: "The woman whether she's right or wrong, one thing is obvious, she's wise... The husband too is hard working."
