Singer Jason Derulo is facing widespread criticism online after a video emerged showing a shark and a manta ray kept in a floor aquarium inside his home in Tarzana, California. The footage, captured during a house tour with streamer N3on, quickly ignited debate on social media platforms, with many questioning whether the marine animals had adequate space and a suitable environment.
Social media backlash
Numerous Reddit users described the setup as cruel, arguing that the aquarium appeared too small for the animals. Critics also claimed the tank lacked features that would mimic a natural habitat, such as proper filtration, hiding spots, and sufficient swimming area. One commentator stated there was "absolutely no reason" for the display, accusing celebrities of treating animals as mere showpieces. Another argued that keeping sharks and rays in such conditions should be illegal.
Animal welfare concerns
Several commenters pointed to the bright lights, noise, and absence of hiding spaces, suggesting the animals could be under unnecessary stress. Some proposed that Derulo could have achieved a similar visual effect with robotic or digital displays instead of using live animals. The singer has not publicly responded to the criticism. Daily Mail reported that it contacted his representatives for comment, but no response has been received as of this writing.
