The 12th Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) witnessed a powerful moment as veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo used his acceptance speech to condemn the rising tide of xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Receiving the prestigious Industry Merit Award, Kanayo dedicated the honor to African film practitioners across the continent, emphasizing the need for unity and solidarity.
Kanayo's Acceptance Speech
During his heartfelt speech, Kanayo dedicated the award to all African film practitioners, both past and present. He said, "This is for Africa, for everyone who works as cast and crew. Even before 1992, many of us are no longer in good health, many have returned to their villages, and many have passed on." Reflecting on his journey, he added, "Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, 'What have I done to still be alive?' Yes, I have made a lot of sacrifices. I want to extend a hand of friendship to Canal+, please keep this going. This is one thing that unites the whole of Africa."
Condemnation of Xenophobic Attacks
Kanayo did not shy away from addressing the troubling issue of xenophobia in South Africa. He stated, "On this note, I am not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa." His words resonated with the audience, highlighting the importance of pan-African solidarity.
Sola Sobowale Also Honored
Veteran actress Sola Sobowale was also a recipient of the Industry Merit Award at the same ceremony. Expressing her gratitude, she said, "I appreciate the support and love. Without my friends, supporters, directors, colleagues, and producers, there is no Sola. Thank you all for making me still relevant. Mi o ti de (Expect more from me). I love you all." Her emotional tribute underscored the collaborative spirit of the Nigerian film industry.
