A Nigerian man, Chijioke Okoli, has generated buzz online after recreating the iconic look of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo as a heartfelt tribute. Ekubo, who died on May 11 after battling metastatic kidney cancer, was laid to rest in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State. The actor was widely admired for his impeccable fashion sense, often seen in traditional Igbo attire such as Isiagu and Agbada.
Recreating Ekubo's Signature Outfit
Chijioke's recreation featured a dark red or burgundy knitted brimless cap, a simple short-sleeved white crewneck t-shirt, and dark orange casual trousers—the same outfit Ekubo wore in a video that went viral online. In a Facebook post on June 21, Chijioke explained that the outpouring of tributes from Ekubo's friends and colleagues made it clear that the actor truly lived and loved. Chijioke expressed his desire to be remembered the same way when he passes away, saying the outfit was his final respect to the beloved actor.
I have watched carefully, all the videos and read posts, friends and colleagues’ eulogies on Alex. One thing was clear: 'ALEX LIVED and ALEX LOVED.' Just like Alex, I want to be remembered as one who LIVED and LOVED when I’m no longer here. Yesterday, I chose to reference Alex’s Igbo Santa outfit as my last respect to the one whose passing touched all of us. To his family, friends and Associates, be consoled. Rest well, Fine man.
Reactions to the Tribute
Many social media users reacted to Chijioke's post, praising Ekubo's legacy. Nnaemeka Chris commented, 'He was an absolute sweetheart! Hearing the voice note he sent to Denrele got me.' Solace Chimezirim noted, 'It was as if he knew he wouldn't spend much time here. He made so much impact within a short period of time here.' Iyke Ephraim Udechukwu added, 'Alexx’s life is worthy of emulation. He really loved and lived.' Excel Samduke Kalu remarked, 'The love was felt and I believe it was all real and not fake.' Okenwa Chibuzor pointed out, 'And Alex never dragged or wrote rubbish about anyone on social media in the name of content. He was kind and compassionate. You should start from there.'
