Manchester United seal £50m deal for Andrey Santos

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for a total fee of £50 million. The deal includes an initial payment of £48 million, with an additional £2 million in performance-related add-ons. Santos has committed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, keeping him at the club until 2031.

Santos seeks regular game time after Chelsea struggles

The 22-year-old Brazil international was eager to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after finding it difficult to secure consistent playing time behind Chelsea's established midfielders Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. In the 2026/27 season, Santos made 27 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, but only 13 of those were starts. With Chelsea failing to qualify for European competition, Santos faced an even tougher battle for regular minutes. United moved swiftly to secure his signature, capitalizing on his desire for a fresh start.

Santos expresses excitement about United move

Speaking after completing the transfer, Santos said: "Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented. As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick; he is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams." He added: "Everybody told me about how ambitious the club is and the amazing environment that has been created here. I know just how strong the squad is and I cannot wait to fight together to compete for the biggest trophies."

United director praises Santos' qualities

Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's director of football, commented on the signing: "Andrey is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch. He was a key target for us in an important position, so we are delighted that he will join Michael's squad so early in pre-season."

Santos' journey from Vasco da Gama to Old Trafford

Santos originally joined Chelsea from Brazilian club Vasco da Gama in 2023. During his time at Chelsea, he spent loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg, gaining valuable experience in different leagues. The 22-year-old failed to make Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup squad this summer, but he will now aim to revive his career at Manchester United under the guidance of manager Michael Carrick.
