Hollywood actor and director Mel Gibson and his longtime partner, screenwriter Rosalind Ross, have officially ended their relationship after being together for nine years.
A Joint Statement Confirms the Split
The former couple confirmed the news in a joint statement to People magazine on Tuesday, December 30. "Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible," the statement read. Reports indicate that Gibson, who is 69, and Ross, 35, actually ended their romantic relationship quietly about a year ago.
Their primary focus now is the shared parenting of their son, Lars, who is 8 years old. The pair first connected through mutual friends back in 2014 and began dating soon after. Their relationship was confirmed publicly two years later when news emerged that they were expecting a child together.
A Relationship Largely Away from the Spotlight
Gibson and Ross welcomed their son in 2017. The birth came just days before Gibson received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for his acclaimed war film, "Hacksaw Ridge." Gibson himself highlighted the joy of that moment, stating at the time, "What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son."
Despite being a high-profile couple, they managed to keep most details of their private life away from the media. They did, however, make a few notable public appearances together. These included walking the red carpet at the 69th Cannes Film Festival in 2016 and later at the 2017 Oscars. More recently, in 2024, Gibson was seen on the red carpet with their son at a screening of his film "Monster Summer."
Overcoming Tragedy and Focusing on Family
The family faced a significant tragedy in January 2025 when their $14.5 million Malibu home was destroyed in the devastating LA wildfires. Speaking about the loss on News Nation on January 9, Gibson emphasized what mattered most, saying, "The good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way, that’s all I can care about, really."
Mel Gibson has eight other children from previous relationships. He shares seven children with his ex-wife Robyn Moore, to whom he was married from 1980 until their divorce in 2011. Their children are Hannah, 45, twins Christian and Edward, 43, William, 40, Louis, 37, Milo, 35, and Thomas, 26. He also has a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with his former girlfriend, Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva. Their relationship lasted approximately three years, ending in 2010.
