Controversial Facebook Post Reignites Debate on Gender and Wealth
A Nigerian woman, Abuka Ojochide, has stirred fresh controversy by advising women against dating or marrying poor men. In a Facebook post on Monday, July 13, 2026, she defended her earlier stance, which had drawn significant backlash from critics who argued that wealth is not gender-specific.
Ojochide's Argument: Women Are Never Poor
Ojochide acknowledged that critics raised salient points, such as “wealth is not gender specific” and “we have more poor women than men.” However, she maintained her position, asserting that a woman without money is fundamentally different from a man without money. According to her, “From the day a woman is born, she is rich. A man without money is a poor man. A woman without money isn’t a poor woman. Clock that!”
Comparing Behaviors of Men and Women Without Money
She elaborated by comparing the behaviors of men and women who lack financial resources. “A woman without money would still ensure the house is clean, there is food to eat, the children are well taken care of. But you see a man without money, he would sit all day blaming the government for being poor and makes no effort in leaving his current situation,” she wrote.
Direct Advice to Women
Ojochide concluded her post with a clear directive: “Dear Woman, Do not marry a poor man. Do not date them.” The post has since sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users challenging her views on gender and economic responsibility.
