The Nigerian gospel music community has been thrown into a state of confusion and suspense following the sudden cancellation of burial arrangements for the late singer, Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi.
Sudden Cancellation of Final Rites
In a surprising turn of events, the family and planning committee for the late evangelist's funeral called off all scheduled events. The announcement was made public on Saturday, January 17, 2026, just days after the detailed burial programme had been released to the public.
The official communication was delivered by Omije Ojumi's close friend and fellow gospel artiste, Lanre Alewilese. He shared both a written statement and a video explanation in Yoruba on his Instagram page to clarify the situation for grieving fans and colleagues.
Reason Behind the Postponement
In his statement, Alewilese explained that the difficult decision was made necessary due to unresolved matters arising from within the singer's family. He expressed deep regret for any inconvenience caused but stressed that the family's decision was final.
"To whom it may concern: This is to inform you that all plans and arrangements for the burial of our late sister and colleague, Lady Evangelist Bunmi Akinnaanu a.k.a. Omije Ojumi, by the Burial Planning Committee has been totally cancelled," the statement read. "This decision became necessary due to some issues arising from and within her family. We deeply regret the inconvenience."
Alewilese further urged the public to disregard all earlier information about the burial programme. He confirmed that the burial has been postponed indefinitely until the family issues are resolved, assuring that new arrangements would be communicated directly by the family when the time is right.
Shock and Disappointment Among Fans
The cancellation has left many fans, friends, and fellow gospel musicians in shock. Preparations were already underway for a series of events that were meant to begin on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the LTV 8 Ground in Ikeja, Lagos.
The now-cancelled schedule, initially announced by gospel artiste Alayo Melody on Friday, January 16, included a service of songs, a candlelight procession, and a tribute night. A private interment was planned for January 21.
Omije Ojumi passed away on January 12, 2026, after a battle with a severe leg ailment. Her death was a significant loss to the gospel music industry, where she was beloved for her ministry and generosity. An old video resurfaced showing fellow singer Yinka Alaseyori revealing that Omije Ojumi gifted her her first car when she was starting her music career.
