A Nigerian PhD candidate, Ogechukwukamma Christine Kalu, has sparked conversations after sharing why she felt joy watching the trending Netflix series, The Polygamist. The South African drama premiered globally on Netflix on June 12, 2026, and follows Jonasi Gomora, a self-made CEO whose glamorous life unravels under the weight of multiple wives and secret affairs.
Joy in Exposure of Dysfunction
In a Facebook post, Kalu explained that her joy stemmed from the series forcing the world to confront the ripple effects of adults remaining in unhealthy relationships. She wrote: “The only thing I took away from watching The Polygamist series was a profound sense of joy, joy in knowing that the world is finally being forced to confront the ripple effects of adults remaining in unhealthy relationships.”
Kalu, who is US-based, noted that the series stripped away the romanticized framing of polygamy and exposed emotional, psychological, and structural fractures. She highlighted subtle cumulative harm, emotional neglect, competition for validation, instability, and normalization of dysfunction, which she said are patterns that shape entire family ecosystems.
Ripple Effects on Children and Society
The PhD candidate emphasized that the series highlights the ripple effect often overlooked in Nigerian and African contexts. She observed: “We see how unresolved tensions among adults translate into confusion, insecurity, and emotional burden for children. We see how power dynamics, inequity, and dissatisfaction become normalized.”
Kalu explained that her joy is not in the dysfunction but in its exposure, which creates opportunities for accountability and awareness—core to violence prevention. She said the series accurately describes her research in family and community violence prevention, rooted in the belief that adult decisions ripple outward, shaping children’s developmental pathways and community norms.
Public Reactions to the Analysis
Kalu’s post drew reactions from social media users. Idemudia George commented: “I hope women also learn from this especially during the dating stage that double or even triple dating also causes emotional neglect, competition for validation, instability and dysfunction for the men folks too.”
Chinenye Odionye said: “I would have loved to watch the series but I am still healing from growing up in a polygamous home!”
The series has stirred widespread discussion online, with many sharing their reviews after its debut. In a related story, a TV host also explained why she would not watch the series despite the hype.
