Twenty-four hours after a grand ceremony, Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigeria's President, has publicly addressed his installation with a significant chieftaincy title. The event, which took place on Sunday, December 21, saw him and his wife, Layal, honoured by the Alaafin of Oyo in a gathering of the nation's political elite.
A Historic Ceremony at the Alaafin's Palace
On December 21, dignitaries from across Nigeria's 36 states converged on the ancient palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Owoade. The purpose was to witness a major cultural event: the conferment of prestigious titles on Seyi Tinubu and his wife. Seyi was installed as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland, while his wife, Layal, received the title of Yeye Okanlomo of Yorubaland.
The title "Okanlomo" carries profound cultural weight in Yorubaland, symbolising a child who is uniquely beloved by the people. The ceremony, performed by Oba Abimbola Owoade, marked a notable moment in his reign and transcended a mere family affair, becoming a cross-regional celebration of tradition and unity.

Taking to his Instagram page, Seyi Tinubu broke his silence to share his profound appreciation. He described the occasion as "historic" and expressed a deep sense of debt to the Alaafin and the traditional council for their hospitality.
In his post, he wrote, "My wife and I are extending our deepest gratitude to everyone who celebrated with us... We were profoundly honoured by your presence, prayers, and goodwill messages." He specifically acknowledged the presence of high-profile political figures, including the Senate President, the Deputy Speaker, and several Honourable Ministers. Tinubu noted that their support strengthens his commitment to the "upliftment of our heritage."
The event served as a melting pot for Nigeria's political class, featuring state governors and other top government officials, highlighting the intersection of tradition and contemporary politics.

The ceremony also honoured former Governor of Zamfara State, Senator Abdul'aziz Abubakar Yari, who was installed as the Obaloyin of Yorubaland. This move, intended to bridge Northern and Southern leadership, was met with opposition from groups like the Yoruba Youth Council (YYC). The YYC raised alarms over conferring a title on a political figure linked to issues of banditry and corruption, urging the Alaafin to reconsider.
