Actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish is seeking to have her long-standing DUI case in Georgia dismissed, arguing that years of delays have infringed upon her constitutional right to a speedy trial.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Haddish filed a motion asking the court to throw out the case after it reportedly remained unresolved for more than four years.
Arrest and Charges
Haddish was arrested in January 2022 in Peachtree City, Georgia, after police found her asleep behind the wheel around 4 a.m. Authorities charged her with DUI and improper stopping on a roadway, allegedly believing she had smoked marijuana.
Reasons for Delay
In the new filing, Haddish claimed the case has stalled because the judge has yet to rule on key legal motions, including a motion to suppress evidence argued in court in May 2024. Her lawyers stated they repeatedly contacted the court over the last two years for updates but were told officials were still “working on it.”
Impact on Career
Haddish announced she was “ready for trial” around 10 times while waiting for decisions that never came. The actress argued the unresolved case has begun affecting her career and finances. She claimed the pending DUI matter has created difficulties obtaining travel documents for overseas work, especially mentioning issues connected to Australia. Haddish said she has been forced to hire expensive third-party assistance to manage the situation.
The filing also stated that some companies have been hesitant to work with her because the case remains unresolved, resulting in financial losses. After years of delays, Haddish is now asking the court to permanently dismiss the case.
