A remarkable double celebration recently lit up Owerri, the capital of Imo State, drawing a who's who of society. The event marked the 48th birthday of former federal lawmaker, Ozurigbo Ugonna, and a thanksgiving ceremony for his wife, Barr. Ozurigbo Ijeoma, who was recently called to the Nigerian Bar.

The festivities commenced with a solemn church thanksgiving service, attended by a powerful gathering of political leaders, business moguls, traditional rulers, and civic society figures from across the state. Following the mass, the celebration moved to the family's Obiajunwa Lodge, where luxury tents were set up to host dignitaries, corporate organizations, and various associations.
Adding a significant layer to the occasion, the couple was officially initiated into The Knights of St. John International. Representatives from the order, from local commanderies to the state-level grand commendary, arrived in full regalia to honor the Ozurigbos. They emphasized that this prestigious honor is reserved for individuals of proven integrity, service, and strong moral character—qualities they affirmed the couple embodies.
A Celebration of Achievement and Influence
Barr. Ijeoma Ebere Ozurigbo was a radiant focal point of the evening. She graced the event in a stylish two-piece water-drop outfit, warmly engaging guests, before later changing into a stunning all-white kaftan ensemble. She moved gracefully among family, friends, and numerous groups including the Friends of Like-Minds Women Association, Abia State University Alumni, and The Mazi Organisation (TMO).
The guest list was a testament to the family's wide-reaching influence. Major corporate entities like MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, and Globacom were represented, alongside senior officials from banks such as Fidelity Bank, GTB, and Union Bank. The United Isu Progressives Union (UIPU), led by Chief Duru Ugochukwu, presented gifts, while various women and youth associations added vibrant colour to the proceedings.
A symbolic moment unfolded after the birthday cake cutting, as Ugonna and his wife took to the dance floor. They were joined by friends, political associates, and well-wishers, celebrating their shared journey of love, marital bliss, and service.
Enduring Political Relevance and Grassroots Legacy
Beyond the merriment, discussions highlighted Ozurigbo's sustained political relevance despite being out of office for over two years. Attendees described him as maintaining a cult-like followership and deep organic support in Orlu zone and across Imo State. Many see him as one of the most significant and genuinely loved figures in the state outside of active politics, intensifying calls for him to declare his intentions as the 2027|2028 election cycle approaches.
His legacy from his time in the House of Representatives, where he represented Nkwerre/Isu/Nwangele/Njaba Federal Constituency, was recalled. His tenure was marked by impactful empowerment programs, including:
- Donation of seed capital to small and medium-scale business owners.
- Distribution of over 300 tricycles and 500 utility cars across the 43 wards in his constituency.
- Renovation of hospitals from Isu Council to Abba in Nwangele Council.
