African Women Creatives Set Historic Cannes Presence With 10-Nation Delegation
In a landmark development for the global film industry, Women in Film Los Angeles (WIF LA) and Women in Film and Television Africa (WIFT Africa) have announced a groundbreaking initiative that will bring the largest-ever delegation of African women creatives to the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. This historic move represents a significant step forward for African representation on the world stage.
Unprecedented Continental Representation
The delegation will participate in the prestigious Marché du Film, scheduled to take place from May 12 to 20, 2026. For the first time in history, WIFT Africa will host an official booth at the Marché du Film, providing a central platform for engagement with international stakeholders. This booth is expected to serve as a vital hub where filmmakers, producers, investors, and distributors can connect with African talent and explore collaboration opportunities across the continent.
The initiative features participants from ten African nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon, South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire. This diverse representation underscores the growing influence and reach of Africa's creative economy, which continues to expand rapidly with women playing increasingly central roles in shaping its future.
Strategic Collaboration and Network Expansion
The collaboration between WIF LA and WIFT Africa has already led to the establishment of seven national WIFT chapters across Africa, including in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon, South Africa, and Zambia. Plans are actively underway to launch additional chapters in Rwanda, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire, further expanding the network and deepening its impact across the continent.
Representatives from all ten countries will form part of the Cannes 2026 delegation, highlighting a unified continental presence that organizers describe as both symbolic and strategic. This initiative aims to strengthen the global positioning of African women in film and television while shifting toward greater visibility and structured representation at one of the world's most influential film markets.
Unlocking Opportunities and Building Frameworks
Beyond representation, the initiative is specifically designed to unlock opportunities for African women filmmakers by providing access to international markets, financing, and distribution channels. By fostering global connections and building sustainable industry frameworks, the partnership aims to accelerate long-term growth and equity within Africa's creative sector.
As part of the program, WIF LA and WIFT Africa will also serve as presenting sponsors of the Producers Network at the Marché du Film, one of the festival's most prestigious industry platforms. Five accomplished African women producers have been selected to participate: Shirley Frimpong Manso of Ghana, Nicolette Ndigwe-Kalu of Nigeria, Bea Wangondu of Kenya, Bongiwe Selane of South Africa, and Alexandra Amon of Côte d’Ivoire.
Over six days, these producers will engage with global industry leaders, financiers, and potential collaborators, creating pathways for international partnerships and project development that could transform the African film landscape.
Leadership and Vision for the Future
President of WIFT Africa, Inya Lawal, described the initiative as a defining moment for African women in entertainment. She emphasized that the delegation represents a collective effort to reshape the narrative around African participation in the global film industry, shifting from mere inclusion to genuine leadership and ownership.
Similarly, WIF LA's Director of International Programs highlighted the importance of recognizing Africa and other emerging markets as key drivers of innovation and change within the global entertainment landscape. She noted that WIF LA's decades-long commitment to supporting women in film continues to demonstrate the transformative impact of strategic investment in female talent.
Comprehensive Delegation and Industry Impact
The delegation will include chapter presidents, executives, producers, and ecosystem partners from across the continent. Participating organizations include Sparrow Productions, Blingola Media, ZIV Productions, The Bea Company Ltd, and HB&Q Impressions Studio, alongside partners such as DocuBox (Susan Mbogo), the African Creative TV Program, the Nigeria International Film Summit (Dorina Amina Abubakar), and the Digital Creator Africa Academy (Ifeoma 'Oma Areh).
Industry observers say the initiative marks a major milestone in amplifying African voices on the world stage. By bringing together talent, leadership, and opportunity under a unified platform at Cannes, WIF LA and WIFT Africa are not only elevating African women creatives but also helping to shape the future of global storytelling through diverse perspectives and innovative approaches.
This historic presence at Cannes 2026 signals a new era for African women in film, where representation transforms into meaningful participation, collaboration, and leadership in the international creative economy.
