Filmhouse Group and Care4Her Initiative Conclude Women's Cinematography Training in Lagos
Filmhouse Group, in strategic partnership with the Care4Her Initiative, has successfully concluded a comprehensive five-day women-focused cinematography training program in Lagos. The intensive program culminated in a formal graduation ceremony where participants were recognized and awarded certificates of completion, marking a significant step forward in empowering women within Nigeria's vibrant creative sector.
Empowering Women Through Technical Skill Development
The training program was meticulously designed to provide women with both theoretical knowledge and practical, hands-on skills in cinematography. Its primary objectives were to strengthen technical capacity and significantly increase access to entry-level opportunities within Nigeria's expansive film and television production landscape. Over the course of five structured days, participants engaged in rigorous training modules covering essential areas such as professional camera operation, advanced framing and composition techniques, the art of visual storytelling, lighting fundamentals, and crucial on-set production etiquette.
The sessions were uniquely crafted to combine foundational theory with immersive, hands-on practical exercises, all designed to simulate authentic real-world production environments. This approach was specifically aimed at bridging the persistent gap between interest in film production and access to the requisite technical skills, particularly for women seeking to enter behind-the-camera roles in the creative industry. Experienced facilitators and seasoned industry professionals led detailed practical demonstrations and closely supervised participant exercises.
Building Sustainable Careers in Film
Participants were also comprehensively introduced to basic production workflows and gained a deeper understanding of how cinematography integrates seamlessly into the overall film production process. On the fifth and final day, a pivotal panel session was held, themed "Women Behind the Lens: Creating Opportunities and Building Sustainable Careers." Winifred Wessels, the Head of Marketing at Filmhouse Cinemas, addressed the participants during this session.
Wessels spoke extensively on critical topics including talent development and the importance of fostering greater inclusion in technical film roles. She passionately encouraged all participants to continue developing and honing their skills well beyond the scope of the training program, emphasizing the need for lifelong learning in a dynamic industry.
A Shared Commitment to Capacity Building
Following the graduation ceremony, Oyinkansola Gbolagunte, Founder and Executive Director of the Care4Her Initiative, commented on the successful collaboration. "The partnership between Filmhouse Group and Care4Her Initiative reflects a shared and unwavering commitment to capacity building and expanding tangible opportunities for women in technical film roles," Gbolagunte stated.
This initiative underscores Filmhouse Group's ongoing dedication to investing in skills development programs that actively support and catalyze growth within Nigeria's burgeoning creative economy. By focusing on equipping women with specialized cinematography skills, the program aims to create a more diverse, inclusive, and technically proficient workforce for the nation's film industry.
