Lynnette Mitchell's 17-Year Journey Leading Nigeria's Premier Casino
When Lynnette Mitchell first arrived in Nigeria from South Africa, her plan was simple: spend a few years on assignment to help expand a casino operation into West Africa and then move on. Seventeen years later, she is still here, having become a defining figure in the country's gaming industry. In an interview with The Guardian, she recalls, "I came for two years, and I'm still here," reflecting on her unexpected but impactful stay.
From Banking to Casino Leadership
Lynnette's entry into the casino world was not straightforward. Initially steered away from night work by her father, she began her career in banking before transitioning to the casino industry in Southern Africa. Working across multiple countries, she eventually landed in Nigeria, where she was surprised by the warmth and welcoming nature of the people, contrasting sharply with external perceptions.
At the time, Nigeria's casino sector was still developing, with limited infrastructure and cautious public attitudes. However, Lynnette saw this as an opportunity rather than a setback. Over the years, she has played a central role in transforming the Federal Palace Hotel & Casino, known as the FPH, into a more dynamic and customer-focused space.
Transforming the Gaming Experience
Under her leadership, the casino has evolved from a serious environment to an engaging one filled with energy and life. Lynnette introduced new formats and expanded gaming options, redefining the experience beyond traditional expectations. Her leadership style emphasizes structure with flexibility, maintaining high standards while ensuring both staff and customers feel comfortable.
"I don't believe in managing with fear," she says. "You correct behaviour, guide people, and if your staff are not happy, your customers won't be happy either." This philosophy has contributed to long staff retention, a rarity in a specialized industry where experience is hard to replace.
Navigating Challenges and Achieving Recognition
Lynnette's tenure has not been without challenges. She has navigated economic downturns, currency fluctuations, and public health crises like COVID-19, adapting quickly and decisively to ensure business survival. "There were times we thought the business wouldn't survive," she admits, "but you adjust and find a way."
Recognition has followed her efforts. In 2025, the Federal Palace casino received a Governor's Choice Award for excellence, building on its 2021 recognition as 'Nigeria's Best Casino Hotel' at the World Casino Awards. Lynnette attributes these successes to teamwork, stating, "It's not one person; it's a team."
Mentoring Women and Shaping the Future
Beyond operations and awards, Lynnette has made a significant impact by mentoring and elevating women into key roles within the organization, creating pathways in a traditionally male-dominated industry. She views this as a responsibility, saying, "Women should take space; there's nothing stopping you if you're willing to work."
Reflecting on her 17 years in Nigeria, Lynnette notes that the experience has taught her patience, resilience, and not to take things personally. Looking ahead, she envisions the FPH becoming one of the best in West Africa, emphasizing consistency and continuous effort. "You can't build something like this and then relax," she concludes, underscoring her commitment to ongoing improvement in the ever-evolving gaming landscape.
