Alumni Urge Nigerians to Prioritize Healthy Living and Fitness

The Old Boys Association of Jibowu High School, Lagos, has called on Nigerians to prioritize regular exercise and medical check-ups to maintain good health and promote longevity. The group emphasized that such activities enhance both physical and mental well-being while strengthening social connections within society.

Health Walk Event

President of the association, Teriba Adeboye, made the appeal during a four-kilometre health and fitness walk organized by the alumni in Yaba, Lagos. The walk started from the school premises, proceeded through Herbert Macaulay Road beside the pedestrian bridge to Ikorodu Road, Shiro Street, Akinsoji Street, Morocco, Isaac John, and Fadeyi Roundabout, before returning to the school. Medical professionals provided check-up services, examining participants' vital signs and recommending medications where necessary.

Objectives of the Initiative

Adeboye explained that the event aimed to unite all alumni under one umbrella to promote health and physical fitness, foster unity and fellowship, and gather support for sustainable educational initiatives. The association also sought to raise awareness about preventive measures against hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, which are common health challenges among members. Early detection of ailments, he noted, helps manage and reduce health complications.

“As the saying goes, a healthy nation is a wealthy nation. Ensuring healthy alumni is our ultimate desire. We hope to support sustainable educational initiatives and make it a legacy,” Adeboye said.

Benefits of Physical Activity

Adeboye added that consistent walking and physical activity significantly contribute to overall well-being. He noted that the association partnered with health institutions to provide medical personnel for checking vital signs and recommending medications. Many members, he said, are now at an age requiring greater attention to health, prompting the combination of fitness activities with discussions on school development initiatives tied to sustainable education.

Reiterating that “a healthy nation is a wealthy nation,” Adeboye emphasized that the association’s goal extends beyond healthy alumni to contributing to educational development as a lasting legacy.

Call for Health Awareness

The immediate past president, Mr. Tosin Kadiri, stressed that individuals must take their health more seriously amid growing global health challenges. He urged that regular physical activity should not be neglected, warning that prolonged inactivity could negatively affect health. Kadiri, an estate surveyor and valuer, said the exercise also reinforced the importance of education, which he described as the foundation of every society. He encouraged Nigerians to give back to their communities and alma mater as a way of contributing to societal progress.
