Onyebuchi Lawrence Kalu, a Nigerian man, has publicly praised his wife for her unwavering support during his years of poverty, revealing that she stayed with him when he earned only N20,000 as a teacher and lived in a single room. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Kalu detailed how his wife fed and bought things for him while they dated, and even drank garri excessively during her first pregnancy without ever resenting him.
A Story of Loyalty and Sacrifice
Kalu's post, titled "My Fine Girl.....She Had Opportunities To Leave Me For Richer Guys," recounts how his wife chose to remain with him despite his humble circumstances. He described himself as "Poor...Single...Evangelist Living In One Room Bathing In Public Toilet," earning just N20,000 as a teacher, with his only assets being "ANOINTING And Sharp Mouth."
During their dating years, his wife fed him and bought him items, a gesture he credits for their strong bond. He also shared a poignant memory: the first time his wife used a new brown phone from its packet was in the second year of their marriage. He saved for weeks and bought it through an easy buy scheme, and she shed tears of joy. That phone lasted her five years until it was stolen last year.
Garri During Pregnancy and Building Together
Kalu recounted that during her first pregnancy, his wife drank garri to such an extent that he feared their child, ConqueRose, would be born with big eyes or need glasses. Despite his lack of resources, she never despised him. Today, Kalu sends his salary to his wife to distribute and manage for the family, acknowledging that it is still not enough, but they keep pushing. He noted, "We Are Not There Yet....But We Are Not Where We Used To Be."
Advice to Young Men and Women
In his post, Kalu offered advice to others: "Dear Young Man...Marriage Should Not Scare You....There Are Still Good Women Out There. They Are Many." To young women, he said, "Dear Young Lady... If You Love And Want Him...Please Build With Him ..There Are Still Good Men Out There ..Who Are Grateful And Honourable To Their Family."
The post, shared by Linda Ikeji, highlights a story of marital loyalty and mutual support, offering a counter-narrative to common fears about marriage in Nigeria.
