Ayokunle & The Ark Unveils 'Unspeakable' Album with Spanish and Indigenous Fusion

In a dynamic music landscape characterized by bold experimentation and cultural cross-pollination, the acclaimed gospel ensemble Ayokunle & The Ark has made a powerful comeback with its latest album, Unspeakable. This nine-track project arrives as a meticulously crafted blend of Spanish musical elements and traditional Nigerian sounds, offering listeners a rich sonic tapestry that is both globally resonant and deeply rooted in local identity.

A Creative Evolution After a Lengthy Hiatus

The release of Unspeakable follows the band's successful 2012 album Friend, a 2022 comeback, and the 2025 singles Oba Igbala and Hold On. Band leader Ayokunle Shofu describes this new work as a significant return to music after an extended break, emphasizing that it contains more indigenous components than any of his previous endeavors. The album took approximately six months to complete, with production handled by Johnson Oluwajuwon, widely known as Creativemyind.

Collaborative Efforts and Sonic Diversity

Shofu collaborated with a talented roster of vocalists, including Victoria Simon, Boluwaduro Adeseko, and Ogechi Amara-Sholadoye, alongside five other artists. This hybrid of diverse musical expressions is highlighted by Shofu's experimentation with Spanish in one of the tracks, expanding the project's sonic diversity and appeal. He notes that Unspeakable is a deeply personal journey reflecting his spiritual encounters and growth, transcending mere words due to its lyrical lushness and the profound lessons learned from God during the creative process.

Inspiration and Challenges Behind the Album

Commenting on the inspiration for the album's title, Shofu explained that it mirrors realities beyond human language, such as the wonders of the cross, the power in the blood, and practical Christian living. He revealed that financing the project posed one of the biggest challenges, requiring trust in God for resources and careful selection of featured friends. It cost quite a lot, Shofu admitted, underscoring the financial hurdles in working with professionals to bring the vision to life.

Live Concert and Future Projects

As part of the album rollout, Ayokunle & The Ark staged a live concert on Saturday, March 22, at the Redeem Christian Church of God Rose of Sharon Parish in Ikeja, where attendees experienced live renditions from Unspeakable. Looking ahead, Shofu hinted that his next project may feature him more as a songwriter, lyricist, and composer than as a singer, drawing inspiration from his relationship with God, people, creation, and life. He emphasized that all songs are personal and tasking, born from inspiration and collaborative effort.

This album not only marks a creative evolution for the band but also positions them within the growing movement of Nigerian artists redefining contemporary African music. With its message inviting reflection on the love of the father, Unspeakable offers something for everyone, as Shofu declares, You need to experience it.
