Ayokunle & The Ark Returns with 'Unspeakable' Album Featuring Spanish and Indigenous Fusion
In a dynamic music landscape characterized by bold experimentation and cultural cross-pollination, the acclaimed gospel band Ayokunle & The Ark has made a powerful comeback with their latest artistic offering. The ensemble has unveiled a meticulously crafted nine-track album titled Unspeakable, following the success of their 2012 album Friend, a 2022 return to the scene, and the release of two singles, Oba Igbala and Hold On, in 2025.
A Sonic Blend of Global and Local Influences
The project stands out as a carefully curated fusion of Spanish musical elements and traditional Nigerian sounds, delivering a rich auditory experience that is both globally textured and deeply rooted in local identity. Band leader Ayokunle Shofu collaborated with a talented roster of vocalists, including Victoria Simon, Boluwaduro Adeseko, and Ogechi Amara-Sholadoye, alongside five other artists, to bring this vision to life.
This hybrid musical endeavor, which took approximately six months to complete, was produced by Johnson Oluwajuwon, widely known as Creativemyind. Shofu described the album as a significant return to music after an extended break, emphasizing that it incorporates more indigenous components than any of his previous works, making it a comprehensive artistic package.
Personal and Spiritual Journey in the Music
In one of the album's tracks, Shofu experimented with the Spanish language, further enhancing the project's sonic diversity. He noted that Unspeakable represents a deeply personal journey that mirrors his spiritual encounters and growth. According to Shofu, the album transcends mere words, not only due to its musical quality and lyrical richness but also because of the profound lessons he learned from God throughout the creative process.
More than just another album release, this project signals a creative evolution for the band, positioning them firmly within the growing movement of Nigerian artists who are redefining the boundaries of contemporary African music. The album invites listeners to reflect on the encounter with divine love, a message that goes beyond simple expression. "There is something for everyone on the album. You need to experience it," Shofu passionately declares.
Inspiration Behind the Title and Production Challenges
Commenting on the inspiration behind the album's title, Shofu explained that it reflects realities that surpass human language. "The wonders of the cross, the power in the blood, practical Christian living, they are beyond words. The successful delivery of this project is beyond words too," he stated, highlighting the spiritual depth embedded in the work.
When asked about the challenges faced during production, Shofu admitted that financing was one of the most significant hurdles. "It took some time for me to decide on the friends I featured, and I had to trust God all through the process for financial resources. It cost quite a lot," he revealed, underscoring the financial and logistical efforts required to bring the project to fruition.
Album Rollout and Future Projects
As part of the album's promotional activities, Ayokunle & The Ark staged a live concert on Saturday, March 22, at the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG) Rose of Sharon Parish in Ikeja. Attendees were treated to live renditions from the album, offering an immersive experience of the new tracks.
Hinting at future endeavors, Shofu shared insights into his next project and the inspirations behind his music. "My next project will likely feature me more as a songwriter/lyricist and composer than as a singer. My relationship with God, people, His creation, and life inspire me," he said. He added that all the songs on Unspeakable are deeply personal and demanding, crafted based on inspiration, with collaboration from numerous professionals to realize the vision, albeit at considerable cost.
