Benefits of Adoration: Remaining in Christ for Joy and Peace

In this continuation of the series on adoration, Emeritus Prof. Mercy Olumide explores the profound benefits of remaining in Christ. Drawing from the Gospel of John and other scriptures, she highlights how abiding in Jesus leads to His indwelling, fruitfulness, answered prayer, and fullness of joy.

Remaining in Christ: The Key to Joy

According to John 15:4-11, remaining in Christ results in Jesus' continued presence in the believer's life, a life marked by fruitfulness, success in prayer, and overflowing joy. Conversely, failure to abide leads to fruitlessness and spiritual removal.

Psalm 16:11 declares, "In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." This joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), a deep gladness rooted in God's love, grace, and promises. It is not automatic but cultivated through an abiding relationship with Christ (John 15:1-11).

Scriptural Insights on Joy

  • Joy is linked to salvation (1 Peter 1:3-6; Psalm 5:11) and God's Word (Jeremiah 15:16).
  • It flows from the Spirit and is experienced as we maintain closeness with Christ (Romans 15:13; Galatians 5:22).
  • Full joy comes from remaining in His word, loving others, obeying His commands, and being separate from the world (John 15:7-11; 17:13-17).
  • This joy cannot be destroyed by suffering or hardship (Matthew 5:12; Acts 16:23-25; 2 Corinthians 12:9).

The Peace of God

Peace, another gift of the Spirit, is the rest of heart and mind that comes from knowing all is well between the believer and God. Isaiah 26:3 promises, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." This peace transcends worldly turmoil and keeps us steady amid chaos.

To experience this peace, we must trust in God and devote ourselves to Him. His unchanging love and power sustain us, making us unshaken by surrounding difficulties (Philippians 4:7).
