Divock Origi, the Belgian striker best known for his iconic moments at Liverpool, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. The former Liverpool forward confirmed the decision on Friday, stating that his purpose in the game has been fulfilled.
Origi's Retirement Statement
In a heartfelt statement, Origi said: "My purpose in the game is fulfilled. I lived out my childhood dreams, played on the biggest stages, won the biggest trophies. Grateful to God for all of it." He added: "To all my fans, the clubs, my teammates and my family: this will forever be ours. Thank you. The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling. More of the journey to come. Love, Divock Origi."
Career at Liverpool
Origi joined Liverpool from Lille in 2014 and spent eight years at Anfield, making 175 appearances and scoring 41 goals. He had loan spells at Lille in 2014-15 and Wolfsburg in 2017-18. His contributions were crucial to Jurgen Klopp's successful era, including winning the Premier League and Champions League. Klopp famously called Origi a "Liverpool legend" before his final match at Anfield, saying: "He is, and will be for me, forever a Liverpool legend, one of the most important players I ever had."
Later Career and International Duty
After leaving Liverpool, Origi joined AC Milan on a free transfer and later returned to England on loan at Nottingham Forest in 2024. He earned 32 caps for Belgium, scoring three goals. Origi will be remembered for his clutch performances, especially his memorable goals in the Champions League and Merseyside derbies.
