Nigerian music star Kingsley Okonkwo, widely known as Kcee, has finally addressed the long-standing rumours of a rift with fellow highlife luminary, Flavour. In a candid revelation, Kcee traced the origins of their alleged disagreement back to their first meeting, while firmly stating he never held any personal grudge.
The Genesis of the Alleged Rift
Speaking during a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee provided context to the social media clash that occurred in 2024. The online spat ignited after Flavour made comments criticizing an unnamed individual for allegedly copying his musical style. Although Flavour did not mention any names, Kcee publicly responded, cautioning against attempts to gatekeep Igbo cultural music.
Kcee detailed that the roots of the tension may go back much further. He recalled that popular talent manager, Soso Soberekon, once brought Flavour to him with the hope of securing a record deal. "I came into the music industry before Flavour," Kcee stated. "Soso Soberekon brought him to me years ago to sign to my record label. I was already driving exotic cars and balling before he came to Lagos."
The "Limpopo" hitmaker explained his decision at the time, emphasizing it was not personal. "I told Soso I can't sign Flavour because I didn't see potential in him at that time. It wasn't because I have something against him," he clarified.
Humility and Being Underrated
Kcee further suggested that the perceived beef might be linked to his character and how he is viewed within the industry. He pointed to his humility as a possible factor, explaining that some colleagues have underestimated his talent because he does not publicly boast about his achievements.
"Till now, I don't understand the reason for his beef with me, especially that incident where he alleged that someone was copying him," Kcee said. "A lot of my colleagues underrate my talent, and my humility also contributed to that. Because I don't brag. I don't need it. But as I always say, time will always prove them wrong."
Time as the Ultimate Judge
The award-winning singer reflected on his career trajectory, noting that his sustained success has served as a silent rebuttal to his early doubters. He revealed that some of those who previously underestimated his capabilities have since approached him to apologise.
"My work always proves every doubter wrong," Kcee asserted with confidence. "Some of those who doubted me in the past have come to apologise to me and admitted that they were wrong about me."
The interview sparked varied reactions from netizens, highlighting the ongoing public interest in the dynamics between the two music icons. While some social media users defended Kcee's contributions and lamented condescending treatment from peers, others argued about the relative success and influence of both artists in the Afro-highlife genre.
