Nollywood actress and producer Mary Remmy Njoku has ignited a heated online discussion after urging African Christians to recognize that faith must be complemented by governance and civic accountability. She emphasized that prayer alone cannot resolve issues such as banditry, poor healthcare, and bad roads.
Faith and action must go hand in hand
In a recent Instagram post, Njoku stated that societal problems like insecurity, failing healthcare systems, and deteriorating infrastructure require deliberate planning, accountability, and hard work, not just spiritual intervention. She wrote, "Dear African Christians, as we continue to pray, let us not confuse prayer with action. You cannot bind and cast away bad roads. You cannot rebuke a failing healthcare system into working. You cannot pray away the bandits who are terrorising our lives."
Physical problems need physical solutions
Njoku argued that while prayer provides guidance, strength, and wisdom, it cannot replace tangible efforts. "Physical problems require physical solutions. Spiritual problems require spiritual solutions," she added. She used food production as an example, noting that prayer alone does not put food on the table; someone must plant, harvest, transport, and cook it.
Her comments come amid widespread concerns over insecurity, kidnapping, poor infrastructure, and the rising cost of living in Nigeria. She stressed that critical sectors like healthcare, education, security, and economic growth demand concrete actions from both leaders and citizens.
Mixed reactions online
Njoku's remarks have sparked diverse reactions on social media. Many users agreed that prayer should be accompanied by responsible governance and civic engagement, while others maintained that faith remains essential in overcoming societal challenges. The actress is known for using her platform to encourage discussions on governance, accountability, and national development.
