New data from Spotify's annual Loud & Clear report has unveiled a remarkable surge in earnings for Nigerian artists, highlighting a booming music economy fueled by digital streaming. In 2025, Nigerian artists generated over N60 billion from Spotify alone, marking a staggering 140 per cent increase in revenue over the past two years. This growth underscores the expanding global appeal of Nigerian music and the enhanced economic opportunities for artists across the market.

Unprecedented Streaming and Engagement Metrics

The report provides detailed insights into listener engagement, revealing that Nigerian artists amassed 30.3 billion streams and 1.6 billion listening hours on Spotify in 2025. Additionally, they were discovered by first-time listeners more than 1.3 billion times, representing a 26 per cent rise compared to 2024. These figures illustrate the growing influence and reach of Nigerian music on the global stage.

Dominance in Local Music Consumption

At home, Nigerian music continues to dominate the airwaves, with local artists accounting for over 80 per cent of tracks on Spotify Nigeria's Daily Top 50 chart. This dominance reflects the strength of local talent in shaping the country's listening habits. Moreover, local consumption of Nigerian artists on Spotify surged by 170 per cent year-on-year, indicating a deepening connection with domestic audiences.

Spotify's Perspective on Nigeria's Music Evolution

Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Managing Director of Spotify in Africa, commented on the findings, stating, "Nigeria's music story continues to be one of creativity, innovation, and global cultural influence. What we're seeing is a market where talent is not only reaching new audiences around the world but also building deeper connections at home." She emphasized that the Loud & Clear report aims to highlight the evolving pathways artists are taking to build sustainable careers and showcase how Nigerian creators are shaping the future of music.

Growth Across Key Artist Segments

The data also points to significant growth in specific artist categories:

  • Local streams of Nigerian female artists increased by 55 per cent year-on-year.
  • Local streams of Nigerian independent (indie) artists grew by 75 per cent year-on-year.
  • Approximately 58 per cent of all royalties generated by Nigerian artists on Spotify in 2025 came from independent artists or labels, underscoring their crucial role in the music ecosystem.

This growth highlights the diverse and dynamic nature of Nigeria's music industry, with independent creators and businesses playing a pivotal part in driving economic and cultural impact.
