Nigerian Artists Generate N60 Billion from Spotify Streaming in 2025

Nigerian artists reportedly earned more than N60 billion from music streaming on Spotify in 2025, according to the platform's latest Loud & Clear report. The data reveals a significant surge in both revenue and streaming activity, highlighting the growing commercial strength of Nigeria's music industry on the global stage.

Record-Breaking Streaming Figures

According to the report released on Tuesday, Nigerian artists accumulated 30.3 billion streams and 1.6 billion listening hours on Spotify throughout 2025. These figures represent a remarkable 140 per cent increase in earnings over the past two years, demonstrating the rapid expansion of Nigeria's streaming ecosystem.

Spotify's Managing Director for Africa, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, commented on the development, stating that the data underscores Nigeria's growing cultural influence. She emphasized that Nigerian artists are not only reaching new global audiences but are also building stronger connections with listeners at home.

Local Dominance and Audience Growth

The report noted that Nigerian songs dominated over 80 per cent of Spotify Nigeria's Daily Top 50 chart in 2025, while local streams grew by an impressive 170 per cent year-on-year. This strong local engagement was complemented by significant audience growth, with Nigerian artists discovered by first-time listeners more than 1.3 billion times, representing a 26 per cent increase compared to 2024.

Independent artists played a crucial role in this success story, contributing approximately 58 per cent of all royalties earned by Nigerian artists on Spotify in 2025. The report highlighted notable gains across different artist segments, with streams of independent artists rising by 75 per cent and local streams of Nigerian female artists increasing by 55 per cent year-on-year.

Playlists and Music Discovery

Spotify's editorial and user-generated playlists continued to play a major role in promoting Nigerian music throughout 2025. Nearly 2,000 Nigerian artists were featured in Spotify editorial playlists during the year, while globally, Nigerian artists appeared in about 320 million user-created playlists.

Listeners in Nigeria created over 12 million playlists featuring local music, contributing to a total of more than 60 million playlists containing songs by Nigerian artists created on the platform in 2025.

Evolving Music Tastes

The report also pointed to changing listening habits among Nigerian audiences. Over the past five years, genres such as pop urbaine, alternative pop, anime, emo, and drill have recorded the fastest growth on Spotify in Nigeria, indicating a shift toward more diverse musical preferences.

These findings highlight how Nigerian artists are expanding their global footprint while generating increasing economic value through streaming platforms. The data reflects a rapidly expanding ecosystem where Nigerian music continues to gain traction globally while maintaining strong local engagement.

The report provides comprehensive insight into the global streaming economy and demonstrates the significant commercial potential of Nigeria's music industry. With local music consumption in Nigeria witnessing an increase of up to 82 per cent compared to 2024 and daily streams increasing by 23 per cent, the data confirms Nigerians' strong interest in music streaming.
