Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has launched another verbal attack on the fanbase of superstar singer Wizkid, known as Wizkid FC. The controversy stems from ongoing comparisons some fans make between Wizkid and the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who is Seun's father.
The Core of the Controversy: "New Fela" Comparisons
During a recent Instagram Live session, Seun Kuti expressed strong disapproval of claims by certain Wizkid supporters who label the "Essence" hitmaker as the "New Fela." Some have even argued that Wizkid's achievements surpass those of the legendary musician. Seun firmly stated that such parallels show a fundamental misunderstanding of Fela's enduring impact.
He emphasized that his father's legacy extends far beyond musical success, encompassing profound social, political, and cultural influence. Seun, who previously called Wizkid FC "the most ignorant fan base in the world," insisted that reducing Fela's work to mere popularity charts is a grave misrepresentation.
A Shocking Financial Revelation from Fela's Legacy
The discussion intensified after music producer Samklef, a Wizkid FC member, accused Seun of harboring hatred for Wizkid and made disparaging comments about Fela. In his fiery response, Seun Kuti made a stunning disclosure about the tangible benefits of his father's name.
He revealed that 29 years after Fela's passing, he recently received a sum of approximately $120,000, which is about N170 million. Seun attributed this windfall solely to being Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's son, describing it as a blessing from the grave.
"Fela is still blessing me from the grave," Seun declared, challenging his critics to contemplate whether their own fathers could generate such value long after their death. He used this point to question the accomplishments of those attacking him and his family's heritage.
Accusations and the Call for Respect
Seun Kuti did not limit his criticism to the fanbase alone. He also accused Wizkid and DJ Tunez of benefiting from the ongoing controversy while failing to publicly address what he sees as disrespect toward Fela's legacy. He asserted that he would never allow anyone to dishonor his father under the pretense of praise.
The online reaction to Seun's statements was swift and divided. While some social media users supported his defense of Fela's unparalleled legacy, others criticized his approach, suggesting he focuses on his own career or questioning the long-term value of his own future legacy.
This latest episode adds another chapter to the periodic tensions between guardians of classic Afrobeat and proponents of contemporary Afrobeats, highlighting the ongoing debate about artistic influence, legacy, and respect within Nigeria's vibrant music scene.
