Former Chelsea and Super Eagles winger Victor Moses has shed light on the growing connection between the London-based club and its African supporters, particularly in Nigeria. Speaking during Chelsea's first-ever official fan engagement visit to Nigeria, Moses attributed the club's massive fan base in Africa to the number of Nigerian players who have represented Chelsea over the years.
Moses, who enjoyed a trophy-laden nine-year stint at Stamford Bridge, highlighted that the likes of himself, John Obi Mikel, Celestine Babayaro, and Ola Aina have deepened the relationship between Chelsea and Nigerian fans. He described Nigeria as the heartbeat of football fandom in Africa, praising the energy and unmatched passion of the country's supporters, which he said inspired him during matches and played a pivotal role in his success for both club and country.
Fan Engagement Event in Lagos
The event, held in Lagos over the weekend, was organized by The Famous Chelsea Football Club (CFC) in partnership with MSport, the club's official betting partner in Africa. It featured a watch party, fan interactions, and a question-and-answer session with Moses. The former winger, who was part of Nigeria's 2013 Africa Cup of Nations victory, expressed that returning home to connect with supporters was a special moment for him.
Moses Reflects on Chelsea Career
Reflecting on his nine-year career at Chelsea, Moses described the Premier League club as unique, emphasizing that its winning culture and quality of players set it apart from other clubs he represented. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League titles, making him one of the most successful Nigerian players in Chelsea history.
Moses highlighted Chelsea's 2012/13 UEFA Europa League triumph and the 2016/17 Premier League title under Antonio Conte as among his fondest memories. He noted that his success on the pitch was always driven by the desire to make fans proud.
Proud Moments with Super Eagles
Moses also spoke about his time with the Super Eagles, saying he enjoyed every second playing for Nigeria. Winning the AFCON in 2013 remains one of the proudest moments of his career, along with other titles, and he cherishes that achievement dearly.
