Senator Ned Nwoko has publicly addressed the controversial viral video in which a young man accused him of plotting to harm his wife, popular Nollywood actress Regina Daniels. The incident, which sparked widespread online discussion, saw the accuser later issue a public apology.
Nwoko's Statement on Social Media Accountability
In a detailed press statement shared on his social media platforms on December 5, 2025, the Delta North senator expressed his concerns. He described Nigeria's social media landscape as "one of the most unregulated in the world." Nwoko argued that the platform allows individuals to freely make damaging allegations primarily to gain online traction and views.
He pointed out a disturbing trend where offenders believe they can incite public outrage, avoid immediate consequences, and then simply return with an apology when the situation escalates. The senator emphasized that fabricating serious, unsubstantiated claims for clicks has become a common practice, causing genuine harm to the individuals targeted.
Call for Regulation and Support for Social Media Bill
Ned Nwoko used the opportunity to reiterate his push for stricter social media governance. He questioned why social media companies should not be held accountable for hosting defamatory content on their platforms, drawing a parallel to landlords who face repercussions for illegal activities conducted by their tenants.
"All our local media houses comply with laws concerning defamation. Why make an exception for foreign companies who don’t pay taxes and ultimately avoid all manner of liabilities because of the absence of regulations?" Nwoko stated.
He called for public support for his proposed bill currently before the National Assembly. The legislation seeks to compel social media corporations to register in Nigeria and establish local offices, thereby making them more accountable under Nigerian law.
Mixed Public Reactions to the Controversy
The senator's post elicited a flood of reactions from Nigerians online, with opinions sharply divided.
Some users urged him to focus on legal action against the individual rather than pursuing broader legislation. One user, @abazwhyllzz, commented: "Sir, I don’t see any need for the bill, you know the person who posted the video simply arrest him and let everyone move on."
Others supported a firm stance against the accuser. User @euphychinenye said, "Please Sir Don’t show him mercy just straight to jail," while @kinglemuel99 added, "Abeg sir I want to beg you on behalf of him please never let him go freely I beg you."
However, some questioned the narrative itself. User @ami_love_ada_ukehe_ suggested, "If he no arrest him I will believe they are staged," hinting at skepticism about the entire episode.
This event occurs amidst other news about Regina Daniels, who recently shared photos from a luxury shopping spree, showcasing purchases from high-end brands like Louis Vuitton.
