Nigerian Doctor in US Shares Humbling Journey Abroad

A Nigerian-trained medical doctor, Dr. Obiadi Christen, has shared his humbling journey after relocating to the United States two years ago, revealing that he worked as a car wash attendant and two other jobs to survive despite nearly a decade of medical experience.

Doctor's Struggle to Start Anew in the US

In a video posted on his Instagram page, Dr. Obiadi detailed the various roles he has held since arriving in the US, including working at a car wash. He noted that his extensive medical background seemed "useless" in his new environment as he navigated the transition.

According to him, besides the car wash job, he also worked in a psychiatric hospital and owned a food business that generated $10,000 in its first three months.

Dr. Obiadi explained that he was unable to practice medicine because he failed his first medical licensing exam. However, he remains hopeful for his second attempt, saying, "You know they say 'twice is a charm,' or how do they say it?"

Social Media Reactions

The doctor's story sparked widespread reactions on social media. User cris77272 asked, "So your Nigerian medical qualifications were not recognised?" Another user, bukinoah, encouraged him, saying, "In the end everything is always worth it, and I know everything will work out for you in the long run." Dr. angee added, "It gets better, keep going. We are rooting for you."

Dr. Obiadi's experience highlights the challenges many skilled professionals face when relocating abroad, as their qualifications may not be immediately recognized, forcing them to take on menial jobs while working towards certification.
