Nigerian Lady's Viral TikTok Video Sparks Hermit Crab Education Frenzy
A Nigerian lady recently captured the internet's attention after sharing a video on TikTok of a creature she discovered outside her compound. In the now-viral clip, she expressed confusion and surprise, initially mistaking the animal for a snail with an unusual appearance.
Confusion Over Creature's Identity
The lady, posting from her TikTok account @rachel, filmed the creature and questioned its nature. She wondered aloud if snails had evolved to grow legs, stating, "Is this a new specie or what's happening? Snails have legs? Am I just being crazy?" Her puzzlement stemmed from the creature's snail-like shell combined with visible legs, a feature not typical of snails.
Netizens Step In to Educate
The video quickly garnered reactions from TikTok users, who flooded the comments section to clarify the creature's identity. Many identified it as a hermit crab, a crustacean known for inhabiting empty shells for protection. Users shared insights into its behavior, explaining that hermit crabs lack their own hard shells and instead occupy discarded ones, such as those from snails.
One user, @Call__me__Odogwu, humorously noted, "To my understanding, the snail inside have been eaten already so he is living there." Another, @egovin_drumz, added, "It’s a crab wen they grow bigger then their shell they sometimes look for other shells to enter I guess this one chose the snail shell." Others, like @Everything_by_Mide, mentioned the symbiotic relationship between hermit crabs and snails.
Understanding Hermit Crabs
Hermit crabs are distinct from snails in several ways. Unlike snails, which are mollusks with a single, coiled shell they produce themselves, hermit crabs are crustaceans with legs and a soft abdomen. They rely on finding and occupying empty shells from other animals, such as snails, to shield their vulnerable bodies from predators. As they grow, hermit crabs must seek larger shells to accommodate their size, a process highlighted by users in the comments.
@Snails in Nigeria explained, "That's a hermit crab. Unlike other regular crabs, they don't have a protective shell so, they borrow shells from nearby neighbours. For this scenario, the hermit crab took over an empty snail shell, once it outgrow it, it'll take over the next bigger shell around." This educational exchange turned the viral moment into a learning opportunity for many viewers.
Broader Context and Reactions
The incident reflects a common scenario where social media users share encounters with wildlife, leading to communal education. While some commenters playfully teased the lady for her mistake, others, like @Mr famous, urged patience, saying, "I don’t know what wrong with some of us why mock them they ask because they don’t know the least you can do is try and explain to them." The video has since sparked discussions about hermit crab biology and the importance of curiosity in learning about nature.
This is not the first time such content has gone viral in Nigeria. Recently, another video showed a woman praying over a creature in her kitchen, highlighting how online platforms can amplify everyday experiences and foster engagement around natural phenomena.
