Austrian Priest Collapses and Dies During Sunday Mass in Front of Congregation

A Catholic priest in Austria tragically passed away after collapsing suddenly in front of the congregation during a Sunday mass service. The incident occurred on February 1, 2026, in the small town of Wiesmath, located in the district of Wiener Neustadt, Austria.

Sudden Collapse During Holy Communion

According to a statement released by the Archdiocese of Vienna, 59-year-old priest Raimund Beisteiner had just finished administering Holy Communion and was walking towards the tabernacle to return the host when he suddenly collapsed. Despite receiving immediate professional medical assistance at the scene, he died right there in the church.

Community in Shock Over Loss of Beloved Priest

The mayor of Wiesmath, Erich Rasner, who was attending the mass along with many other believers, witnessed the dramatic event firsthand. The entire community has been left in profound shock by the loss of Father Beisteiner, who had served the parish for nearly two decades and was highly respected both within and beyond the local community.

Mayor Rasner praised the late priest as an extremely conscientious and sensitive spiritual leader, emphasizing the personal loss of a friendship that had developed over many years. Beisteiner had significantly shaped the spiritual life of the parish during his long tenure.

Prayer Service and Funeral Arrangements

In response to the tragedy, a prayer service was quickly organized to honor the memory of Father Beisteiner. The service was attended by numerous priests from the deanery as well as Archbishop Josef Grünwidl.

The funeral for parish moderator Raimund Beisteiner is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the parish church in Wiesmath. The service will begin with the rosary at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Requiem Mass at 10 a.m.
