Civil Servant's Plea: A Race Against Time for a Kidney Transplant
A 45-year-old Nigerian mother and civil servant, Mrs. Salewa Arije, has made a heartfelt appeal to the public for financial assistance to fund a critical kidney transplant. The staff of the Ondo State Ministry of Justice, who hails from Ilaje Local Council Area, is battling a severe health crisis that has left her unable to function.
A Life Disrupted by Kidney Disease
Mrs. Arije, a mother of one, revealed the grim details of her condition to journalists in Akure on Monday. She explained that the excruciating pain from her health issues has intensified daily. The symptoms, which began a few months ago, have rendered her non-functional, forcing her to exhaust all her personal savings on ongoing treatment and dialysis in a desperate struggle for survival.
The severity of her condition is confirmed in a medical report from the Deo-Parakletos Specialist Clinic and Dialysis Centre in Akure (Reference Number: RC1562547). The report, signed by consultant nephrologist Dr. Olalekan Ojo, diagnoses her with acute-on-chronic kidney disease, secondary to long-standing hypertension.
The Staggering Cost of Survival
According to the medical report, Mrs. Arije's current treatment plan is both rigorous and expensive. She is on maintenance haemodialysis, requiring two to three sessions per week, alongside other medications. This routine care alone costs an average of N500,000 every month.
However, the only definitive long-term solution for her condition is a kidney transplant. The report states that this life-saving procedure is available in several Nigerian centres, but it comes with an estimated cost of between N28 million and N35 million—a sum far beyond her means.
Speaking on behalf of the family, her brother, Ariyo Arije, lamented that the family has already spent vast amounts trying to save her. He joined the Alumni Association of Stella Maris College (SMC), Okitipupa, Set 2001, in appealing for help. They are also calling on Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, whom they describe as a kinsman, to intervene and help save Mrs. Arije's life.
