Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, will personally flag off the Lagos to the World expedition on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The event is scheduled to commence at 2:00 PM prompt.
Expedition Honors Cancer Victims
Lagos to the World is the brainchild of Nigerian entrepreneur and BMW enthusiast U. Erik Nwagwu, who lost both his mother and his sister to cancer. He has dedicated the expedition to their memory and to the fight against the disease. According to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Nwagwu's expedition involves a solo overland circumnavigation of the globe in a Nigerian-plated 2008 BMW 535i — the first of its kind departing Nigeria. The former President and elder statesman has graciously blessed the initiative.
Three Legs Across Six Continents
The expedition will depart Abeokuta in three legs, crossing six continents. Alongside every kilometer, a men's health and prostate cancer awareness mission will run, providing free prostate cancer screenings to roadside communities that formal health campaigns never reach.
“This mission is dedicated to my late mother, Professor Helen Nwagwu, and my late sister, Mrs. Onyema Fern Eseka, both lost to cancer,” said Nwagwu, who serves as Managing Director of Carbon Deficits Ltd and is the Driver and Founder of the Lagos to the World Expedition. He is also a Founding Member and Member of the Board of Trustees of BMW Club Nigeria.
Institutional Support Grows
The expedition has attracted significant institutional support ahead of its departure. AXA Mansard Insurance is the Official Insurance Partner, Zuri Health is the Official Digital Healthcare Partner — conducting free prostate cancer screenings in Lagos, Abeokuta, and Accra — and Studio 24 is the Official Photography and Multimedia Partner.
Nwagwu noted that former President Obasanjo's agreement to formally flag off the expedition means “his words will carry immeasurable weight for the mission and for every Nigerian who watches this moment unfold.”
Guided Tour of Presidential Library
Nwagwu added that the former President will personally conduct a guided tour of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library for assembled guests, including Foundation Patrons, BMW Club Nigeria members, and invited dignitaries.
“To be welcomed into this institution by its founder, on the day a Nigerian car sets off to cross the world, is a privilege that will live in the memories of all who attend. That a former President of Nigeria is flagging off the first Nigerian to attempt a global circumnavigation — from his own Presidential Library, in the city of Abeokuta — is a story that will be told for generations,” he stated.
