Trackfit Breast Cancer Walk Draws Over 300 at UNILAG, 17 Referred for Screening
Over 300 at Trackfit Breast Cancer Walk in UNILAG

In a powerful display of community solidarity, over 300 participants converged on the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the 2025 Trackfit Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Held on 10 November 2025, this edition was celebrated as the most successful since the programme's inception, masterfully blending fitness, education, and critical health services.

A Sea of Pink for a Cause

Dressed vibrantly in pink, the attendees created a moving visual of unity, honouring individuals and families affected by breast cancer. The event commenced with a welcome address from compere Kolamide Emmanuel, who set an energetic tone for the day. This was immediately followed by guided warm-up sessions led by a team of dedicated coaches.

Fitness, Fun, and Fundamental Health Checks

Coaches Godwin Obioma, Ifeoluwa Martins Gbayigi, and Davidson Nwaokolo took charge, leading the crowd through structured fitness drills and energizing group activities. These sessions prepared everyone for the main event: a spirited 5-kilometre walk that wound through the university's major landmarks.

The health segment remained a cornerstone of the initiative. In a crucial partnership, a medical team from R Jolad Hospital delivered an impactful sensitisation talk on breast health, self-examination techniques, and the life-saving importance of early detection. Putting words into action, the team conducted on-site clinical breast examinations for 212 women during the event. Of these, 17 were referred for further medical evaluation, a direct outcome highlighting the event's critical role in proactive healthcare.

Building on a Legacy of Impact

Organisers underscored the long-term value of such consistent efforts by sharing a powerful testimony. They reflected on a participant from the 2024 walk whose early detection during last year's screening led to timely treatment. This real-life story served as a poignant reminder of why awareness campaigns are vital.

Behind the scenes, seamless operations were managed by Eyinade Ebiseni, who supervised logistics, while Amuni Damilola and Olawunmi Ogundipe ensured smooth registration and welfare for all. Hydration was provided by Cway, and the atmosphere was kept lively by Normad Music with curated playlists and live sound.

Community and Consistency: The Way Forward

Addressing the participants, Trackfit Founder and Convener Ademola Alugo emphasized the power of community-led health initiatives. "This year’s turnout shows the power of community and consistency," Alugo stated. "What we do is bigger than a walk; it is a reminder that our health must be a priority."

He elaborated that the screenings, awareness sessions, and fitness activities collectively foster a culture of early detection and healthier choices among young Nigerians. Alugo also commended the University of Lagos security operatives for ensuring safety and announced plans to expand Trackfit's community health advocacy, fitness programmes, and educational outreach across Nigeria.
