Governor Abiodun Commits N20 Million to Autism Awareness Campaign

In a significant gesture of support for autism advocacy, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has donated N20 million to the Cycling for Autism with KanyeyaChukwu Initiative. The donation was announced during a meeting with the initiative's team at the governor's office, coinciding with World Autism Day. Governor Abiodun emphasized that autism is not a disease but a special condition requiring understanding and dedicated care, urging greater societal awareness and support for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Recognizing the Talents of Autistic Individuals

During the visit, Governor Abiodun highlighted the achievements of Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, a 16-year-old painter and autism awareness advocate who holds the 2025 Guinness World Record for the largest art canvas created in Abuja. Diagnosed with non-verbal autism, Kanyeyachukwu communicates through vibrant abstract art, demonstrating that autistic individuals often possess unique and extraordinary abilities. The governor praised his parents for their unwavering commitment, noting that their efforts have helped unlock their son's potential, leading to international recognition, including the Austrian Flame of Peace Award and exhibitions across Europe, Africa, and North America.

Governor Abiodun stated, "Your son, Kanye, has distinguished himself in the world of art at a very young age. He set a Guinness World Record by painting a 12,380sqm canvas in Abuja. These are not accidents; they are the result of deliberate and intentional efforts by you and your wife to bring out the best in your son." He encouraged other parents of children with autism to follow this example by identifying and nurturing their children's talents, rather than viewing autism as a limitation.

Expanding Autism Awareness and Caregiver Training

Tagbo Okeke, the father of Kanyeyachukwu, addressed the challenges faced by families managing autism, describing it as a costly condition that requires proper care for positive outcomes. He highlighted a critical shortage of trained caregivers in Nigeria and explained that the Cycling for Autism with KanyeyaChukwu Initiative aims to address this gap. The initiative is conducting awareness campaigns across multiple states, from Enugu to Lagos, targeting rural and underserved communities, schools, and churches.

In partnership with the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, the initiative plans to cover over 600 kilometres nationwide to promote autism understanding. Tagbo Okeke added, "We are also raising funds to train caregivers. Our target is to begin with 1,000 autism caregivers this year." This effort seeks to build a supportive network for autistic individuals and their families, enhancing access to resources and education.

Governor's Call to Action and Broader Impact

Governor Abiodun commended the Cycling for Autism team for broadening his perspective on autism and inspiring him with their educational efforts. He reiterated that autism should not be seen as a handicap but as an opportunity to discover hidden potential, as evidenced by Kanyeyachukwu's success in art and sports. The governor's donation is expected to bolster the initiative's campaigns, fostering a more inclusive environment for autistic Nigerians.

This development underscores the growing recognition of autism issues in Nigeria, with initiatives like Cycling for Autism playing a pivotal role in driving change. By supporting such efforts, Governor Abiodun aims to encourage other leaders and communities to invest in autism awareness and care, ultimately improving the lives of individuals with autism across the country.
