In a swift response to a concerning environmental incident, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has mandated a comprehensive investigation into the source of a gaseous chemical release that impacted dozens of students and teachers in Ijebu-Ode. The event, which transpired two days prior, led to the exposure of 30 students and two educators from Our Lady of Apostles Primary and Secondary Schools (OLAS) through inhalation, prompting immediate governmental action to address public health and safety concerns.
Governor Abiodun Directs Security Agencies and Establishes Emergency Coordination
Through a statement released by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, Governor Abiodun emphasized the urgency of uncovering the root cause of this incident to prevent any future recurrences. The governor has ordered security agencies to conduct a thorough probe, aiming to identify the origins of the gas emission and implement measures to safeguard the community. Additionally, Abiodun has directed the immediate setup of a situation room at the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, designed to coordinate emergency responses and provide complimentary medical treatment to all affected individuals, including students and local residents.
This intervention will extend to several impacted communities, such as Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje Market, ensuring comprehensive support. Governor Abiodun has reassured residents not to panic, clarifying that there is no broader security threat stemming from this isolated event. As a precautionary step, he has also mandated the temporary closure of the affected schools to allow for proper assessment and remediation efforts.

Concurrently, officials from the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) and other safety agencies have mobilized gas analysts to trace the precise source of the emission. Dr. Oresanya, accompanied by key figures including the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Mr. Dare Alebiosu, and Permanent Secretaries from the Ministries of Environment and Education, Dr. Kafayat Lawal and Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, conducted visits to the affected schools and the General Hospital to monitor the situation firsthand.
