Nigerian Resident Doctors to Commence Indefinite Nationwide Strike on Tuesday
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has officially declared plans to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike, set to commence at precisely 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. This significant decision was finalized during the association's virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting, which concluded on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
Government Blamed for Pushing Doctors Toward Industrial Action
In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the National President of NARD, described the situation as "unfortunate" and squarely placed blame on the Federal Government for compelling doctors to resort to another round of industrial action. According to Dr. Ibrahim, the core of the crisis revolves around the implementation of a revised Professional Allowance Table, which was negotiated between NARD and the Federal Government in the aftermath of the prolonged strike that occurred in 2025.
Details of the Agreement and Implementation Delays
The negotiated agreement included comprehensive and improved remuneration packages specifically designed for resident doctors across Nigeria. These packages covered a range of critical allowances, such as call duty allowances, shift allowances, rural posting incentives, and non-clinical duty payments. Initially, the implementation of these enhanced allowances was scheduled to begin in January 2026. However, due to unexplained delays, the rollout was postponed to February 2026.
NARD has now raised serious allegations that the Federal Government intends to discontinue the implementation process entirely by April 2026. The association asserts that this move not only undermines the trust established during previous negotiations but also constitutes a clear violation of prior agreements reached between both parties.
Demands for Immediate Reversal and Settlement of Entitlements
In response to these developments, NARD has issued a firm call for the immediate reversal of the government's decision to halt the allowance implementation. Additionally, the association demands the prompt settlement of all outstanding entitlements owed to resident doctors. The failure to address these issues has been cited as the primary catalyst for the impending strike action.
Expected Impact on Healthcare Services Nationwide
The indefinite strike action is anticipated to cause significant disruptions to healthcare services across Nigeria once again. Hospitals and medical facilities are likely to experience severe strain, potentially affecting patient care and access to essential medical treatments. This development marks another chapter in the ongoing challenges within Nigeria's healthcare sector, highlighting persistent issues related to remuneration and government commitments to medical professionals.
