NYSC Delivers Free Healthcare Services to Oshodi/Isolo Community in Lagos
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos State has successfully conducted a free medical outreach programme for residents of Oshodi/Isolo, as part of its ongoing Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD). This event, held at the Oshodi/Isolo Local Council field, was themed "Your Health, Your Greatest Asset" and aimed to improve healthcare access for underserved populations at the grassroots level.
Quarterly Outreach to Enhance Community Health
Christiana Salmwang, the NYSC Lagos State Coordinator, emphasized that this initiative is a regular quarterly outreach designed to address pressing health needs in local communities. She highlighted that the programme provides a comprehensive range of services, including:
- Free medical consultations with healthcare professionals
- Distribution of essential drugs and medications
- Basic medical tests and screenings
- Health education sessions on preventive care
- First aid services and emergency response training
Salmwang explained that the HIRD programme aligns with the NYSC's community development service goals, focusing on promoting preventive healthcare and reducing barriers to medical access. She urged residents to actively participate in the services and called for sustained support from community leaders and stakeholders to ensure the programme's continuity and effectiveness.
Local Government Support for Health and Productivity
Banjoko Leke, the Council Secretary representing the Oshodi/Isolo Local Council Chairman, spoke at the event, underscoring the critical link between good health and national development. He stated that investing in healthcare enables citizens to contribute more productively to the economy and enhances overall community well-being. Leke praised the NYSC for its efforts in bridging healthcare gaps and encouraged collaborative efforts to sustain such initiatives.
The HIRD programme is a strategic intervention by the NYSC, regularly deployed to extend basic healthcare services to communities with limited access to medical facilities. By targeting rural and underserved areas, it aims to foster healthier populations and support broader public health objectives in Nigeria.
