Abia State Health Insurance Scheme Sees Massive Enrollment of 157,462 Residents
Significant progress continues in the ongoing healthcare reforms within Abia State under the administration of Governor Alex Otti, with a remarkable milestone of 157,462 residents now enrolled to access healthcare services through the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme (ABSHIS). This announcement was made by the State Information Commissioner, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House following the weekly state executive council meeting.
Governor Otti's Vision Drives Healthcare Expansion
Commissioner Kanu emphasized that the scheme is a direct result of Governor Alex Otti's vision to provide citizens with accessible healthcare and financial protection. In a move to further strengthen the healthcare workforce, the Governor has approved the employment of an additional 50 nurses, supplementing the 500 already hired under the Human Resource Programme. This recruitment is part of a broader initiative to bring in 771 medical personnel across various categories, including 550 nurses, to staff government hospitals effectively.
Educational and Collaborative Advancements in Health Sector
The Abia State College of Nursing Sciences has received a significant boost following its inaugural accreditation, with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) expressing strong approval during a recent inspection visit. The NBTE team was particularly impressed by the extensive remodeling of the school's facilities and training programs, commending Governor Otti's transformative efforts in the state's health sector.
In a strategic partnership, Abia State is collaborating with the USA MedShare Group to train technicians on the repair and maintenance of hospital equipment. This collaboration aims to ensure sustainable healthcare delivery by covering the use of surgical equipment, enabling health workers to operate new machinery being introduced into state healthcare facilities.
Positive Health Outcomes and Generous Donations
Commissioner Kanu highlighted that no positive cases of diseases of public health importance, such as Lassa fever, Mpox, Diphtheria, Yellow fever, Cholera, and Rabies, have been reported in the state over an extended period. Additionally, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated a 1.5 Tesla MRI Scanner valued at one million dollars to support Governor Otti's healthcare transformation agenda. This scanner will be installed at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba, enhancing medical diagnosis and complementing state-of-the-art medical facilities across the state.
Upcoming Free Medical Outreach and Training Initiatives
During the press interaction, the State Health Commissioner, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, announced a collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) to conduct a free medical outreach from April 12 to 17, 2026. Abia residents are encouraged to participate, with general surgeries and consultations scheduled at Aba General Hospital, and eye care services at the Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia. This outreach will also include a training component, where state health workers will receive instruction from USA-based experts to enhance their competencies.
Success Stories from Healthcare Reforms
Commissioner Uche shared a compelling success story from the Ohiya Primary Health Care Centre, which was retrofitted under Governor Otti's administration. A woman suffering from eclampsia, a life-threatening obstetric condition characterized by protein in urine, high blood pressure, and convulsions, was successfully delivered of twin babies. This achievement was made possible by the newly equipped labor rooms, which include oxygen and infant resuscitation equipment, showcasing the tangible benefits of the ongoing healthcare reforms in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.
