New Zealand Immigration has published official guidance confirming that four categories of travellers are not required to obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before entering the country in 2026. The announcement, made on the official New Zealand Immigration website, clarifies that while most travellers must hold either a valid visa or an NZeTA, these specific groups are exempt from both requirements.
Who Is Exempt From the NZeTA Requirement?
The first category covers travellers who already hold a valid New Zealand visa, including work, student, visitor, resident, or permanent resident visas. According to the guidance, holding any valid visa is sufficient on its own, removing the need for an NZeTA regardless of the visa type.
The second category includes anyone travelling on an Australian passport, a New Zealand passport, or a foreign passport that carries a New Zealand citizen endorsement. This group is automatically exempt without additional documentation.
Antarctic Treaty Members and Visiting Forces
The third category comprises members of, or individuals associated with, a scientific programme or expedition under the Contracting Party to the Antarctic Treaty. However, these travellers may need to provide evidence to support their status at the border.
The fourth category covers members of a visiting force, including civilian employees, who are travelling in the ordinary course of their employment or duty. Like the Antarctic Treaty group, they may also be required to produce supporting documentation.
What Travellers Should Know Before Departure
For travellers who do not fall into any of the four categories, obtaining an NZeTA before departure remains a legal requirement for entry into New Zealand. New Zealand Immigration's guidance makes clear that border officials may request documentation confirming status for those in the Antarctic Treaty and visiting force categories, so carrying the relevant paperwork is strongly advised.
