Avon Medical Launches N200m ICU to Combat Medical Tourism in Nigeria
Avon Medical Unveils N200m ICU Facility in Lagos

In a significant boost for Nigeria's healthcare sector, Avon Medical Practice has officially opened a multi-million naira Intensive Care Unit designed to offer world-class treatment within the country.

A Major Investment in Critical Care

The hospital announced the launch of its fully enhanced Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on 19 December 2025. This new facility represents a substantial investment of N200 million and is housed within the medical centre's recently completed building extension. The primary goal of this project is to directly address the issue of medical tourism by providing advanced healthcare services locally.

Dr Akinbiyi Oke, the Chief Executive Officer of Avon Medical Practice, emphasized the hospital's commitment during the unveiling. He stated that the commencement of ICU operations reflects their unwavering dedication to excellence in healthcare delivery.

Advanced Equipment and Specialist Team

The upgraded ICU is equipped to handle a wide range of severe medical conditions. These include severe respiratory failure, post-operative complications, sepsis, cardiac emergencies, and multi-organ dysfunction.

The unit boasts an array of cutting-edge medical technology to ensure optimal patient care:

  • Mechanical ventilators with multi-mode capabilities
  • Continuous vital-signs patient monitors
  • An advanced infusion system with multiple pumps
  • Defibrillators and ECG machines
  • Specialist ICU beds with pressure-relieving systems
  • A medical-grade air-filtration system

Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the ICU is staffed by a dedicated team led by a Consultant Intensivist. The team includes three intensive-care physicians, three critical-care nurses on rotation, three nursing assistants, and various on-call specialists.

Reducing the Need for Treatment Abroad

Dr Oke highlighted that this N200 million investment in critical-care infrastructure demonstrates the hospital's resolve to bridge the gap in access to specialised healthcare. He explained that with this new addition, Avon Medical is better positioned to manage critical emergencies and complex medical cases promptly and precisely.

"We are reinforcing our commitment to ensuring Nigerians have access to world-class healthcare without the need to travel abroad," Dr Oke affirmed. This development is seen as a concrete step towards retaining healthcare spending within the Nigerian economy and providing life-saving interventions locally.
