Eleos Hospital Introduces ThuFLEP Laser for Prostate

Eleos Specialist Hospital in Abuja has commenced Thulium Fiber Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (ThuFLEP), a new laser technology that completely removes enlarged prostate tissue without surgical incisions. The procedure allows patients to go home the same day or the day after, with little to no blood loss and no loss of erections.

How ThuFLEP Works

The ThuFLEP procedure uses a specialized laser to remove the enlarged prostate regardless of size. Unlike traditional surgery, there are no cuts to the body, and the patient remains awake during the operation. The laser technology has modifications that give it advantages over previous lasers, and it can also be used for other medical purposes such as treating kidney stones.

Success with Over 30 Patients

According to Mr. Joshua Amayanvbo, Head of Operations at Eleos Specialist Hospital, the hospital has successfully performed ThuFLEP on more than 30 patients, with each going home the same day or the day after the procedure.

Expert Insights on Benefits

In a recent interview on Arise Television Morning Show, Dr. Paul Ngwu, a Consultant Urologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, highlighted the importance of ThuFLEP. He explained that the new technology minimizes complications associated with older procedures. "We'll finish the surgery and the urine is clear. And there is no bleeding there, even for a very big prostate," Dr. Ngwu said. "You will discover that you have removed 300g prostate or 400g prostate, and there is no need for transfusion at all." He also emphasized that the procedure does not affect erections.

Public Health Awareness

Dr. Ngwu stressed that the program aims at public health education. "This is not advertisement, but to create an awareness for members of the public to know that there are solutions to these problems and that such technology exists," he added. He noted that more information is available online by searching ThuFLEP.
