Global Healthcare Deficit
According to Mamta Murthi, Vice President for the People's Vice Presidency at the World Bank, an estimated 4.5 billion people globally lack essential health services. In a recent blog post, she emphasized that good health is crucial for human potential, enabling education, workforce participation, and economic productivity. However, health systems face worker shortages, weak infrastructure, rising demand, and financial barriers.
AI as a Solution
Murthi highlighted AI's potential to address key healthcare challenges, especially in emerging and low-resource markets. Access to care remains the most urgent issue, with fragmented systems often directing patients to inappropriate care levels, leading to overcrowded hospitals and higher costs.
AI-powered tools such as virtual triage, remote diagnostics, and clinical decision support can extend services to underserved populations and guide patients to appropriate care faster. These innovations can strengthen primary healthcare, improve referral systems, and enable earlier disease detection.
Target and Impact
The World Bank's target of 1.5 billion beneficiaries by 2030 represents a significant step toward universal health coverage. By integrating AI responsibly, the Bank aims to overcome systemic barriers and deliver quality care to those most in need.
