Kano Suspends 3 Doctors After Surgical Scissors Left in Patient's Stomach Leads to Death
Kano suspends doctors over forgotten surgical scissors

The Kano State Government has taken decisive action following a tragic case of medical negligence that resulted in the death of a patient. Three medical personnel have been suspended after a pair of surgical scissors was forgotten inside a patient's abdomen during a procedure.

A Fatal Oversight

The victim, Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, underwent a medical procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in September 2025. Following the surgery, she experienced significant discomfort. A series of subsequent tests and scans revealed the horrifying cause: a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her stomach.

Despite medical efforts, the complication proved fatal. Aishatu Umar passed away on January 11, 2026. The distressing incident gained public attention after her family shared the story online, sparking widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

Official Investigation and Suspensions

Responding to the public outcry, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board launched an immediate investigation. In a statement signed by the Board's Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, it was confirmed that a preliminary inquiry ordered by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, verified the grievous error.

The Board announced the immediate suspension from clinical duties of the three personnel directly involved in the case. Furthermore, the matter has been escalated to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for a comprehensive investigation and to determine appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with professional standards and the law.

Condolences and a Pledge for Accountability

In its official communication, the Board expressed profound regret over the incident. "The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss", the statement read. It also sought to reassure the public, asserting that "negligence will not be condoned in any form."

This case highlights critical issues of patient safety and professional accountability within healthcare systems. The referral to the ethics committee suggests that further sanctions, potentially affecting the medical licenses of those involved, could follow the ongoing probe.
