Edo Removes 25 Mentally Ill from Streets in 2025

The Edo State Government has made significant strides in addressing mental health challenges and social welfare through its comprehensive support programs, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development Eugenia Abdallah announced during a press conference in Benin City.

Mental Health and Rehabilitation Initiatives

Between January and September 2025, the state government successfully removed 25 mentally deranged persons from public streets as part of its ongoing mental health support programme. The initiative represents a crucial step in providing proper care for vulnerable individuals while maintaining public safety.

In addition to the mental health interventions, the commissioner revealed that six people battling drug addiction have been admitted into specialized rehabilitation centers. This dual approach addresses both mental health disorders and substance abuse, recognizing their interconnected nature in many cases.

Comprehensive Social Development Programs

The state's social development efforts extend beyond mental health support. Commissioner Abdallah detailed several ongoing initiatives, including collaboration with orphanage operators and owners to significantly improve living conditions and care standards for children in institutional care.

The ministry has provided shelter and comprehensive rehabilitation services for trafficked females, offering them a pathway to recovery and reintegration into society. This intervention addresses the traumatic experiences of victims while preventing re-victimization.

Women's economic empowerment remains a cornerstone of the state's development agenda. The government is equipping women with income-boosting skills, including training in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle conversion and electric-vehicle maintenance. These technical skills position women to benefit from emerging opportunities in the green energy and automotive sectors.

Impact of the SHINE Agenda

The commissioner highlighted the tangible results of the SHINE Agenda across multiple sectors. Improved maternal care, expanded health insurance access, and free anti-malaria campaigns have collectively reduced maternal mortality rates while enhancing health outcomes for women and children throughout the state.

In agriculture, the government's focus on increased productivity, farmer support, and promotion of agro-processing and value addition has empowered female farmers. These initiatives have contributed to improved food security and enhanced nutrition for women and their families.

Educational and youth development programs have also seen substantial progress. The ministry has prioritized programs that empower the girl child through education and skills development initiatives, ensuring they can reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to state development.

Collaboration with young advocates and implementation of active school programs have promoted positive values and behaviors among youth. These initiatives aim to equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to drive positive change in Edo State and Nigerian society at large.
