The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called on media professionals to give priority to their mental well-being and embrace healthier work routines amid increasing workplace stress in journalism.
Ike made this appeal on Monday during a health walk organized as part of the 2026 NUJ Press Week celebrations in Abuja, under the theme: “Mental Health and Stress Management in High-Pressure Work Environments.” She noted that the theme directly addresses the everyday experiences of journalists, who often operate under immense strain to meet deadlines, uncover stories, and manage the complexities of reporting in a politically and socially charged atmosphere.
“We all understand the challenges of being journalists in Abuja. We work late into the night to break news. We face danger to report the truth. We deal with angry leaders, fake news, and tight deadlines. All this accumulates stress that can leave us exhausted, depressed, or even ill. Our minds and bodies require care, just as our stories need accuracy,” she stated.
Ike described the health walk as more than just a physical activity, emphasizing that it was intended to foster mental wellness, relaxation, and solidarity among journalists. She highlighted the importance of adopting mental health-friendly practices, such as taking breaks, seeking counseling when needed, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“That is why this health walk is so significant. It is not merely exercise. It is a way to clear our minds, build resilience, and support one another. As we walk together through the streets of Abuja, let us share our concerns, laugh, and plan for better days. Simple actions like this can prevent burnout and keep us sharp for the work we love,” Ike said.
“We must be alive for that story to be heard or read.” She urged media organizations to provide counseling services, rest periods, and safer working conditions for their staff.
The NUJ FCT Chairman also praised the Press Week planning committee for organizing the event, as well as the sponsors and participants who joined the health walk. “Let us walk with energy. Let us make this Press Week unforgettable. Together, we will remain healthy, happy, and ready to serve Nigeria,” she concluded.
